"Climate Catastrophes" featuring kathy klein

Friday, January 5
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

In Climate Catastrophes, kathy klein explores the often-terrifying moments when nature unleashes an attack on us, an attack which we are powerless to halt. Whether fires in California where her family lives or hurricanes that come up the coast to swirl around Gloucester, these climate moments leave people defenseless. Approaching the subject matter abstractly in paintings ranging from 6x6 to 36x48, klein presents the impact of the natural world gone wild. Floods and drought join the hurricanes and fires as current climatic conditions we face. And sea level rise which threatens those of us who live on the riverfront remains a future catastrophe to be faced. Abstract paintings of the glaciers and ice ledges of Antarctica mingle with those of flooded fields and grains of sand, the roar of fires, and the winds to evoke the wonder and danger of nature.

The opening of this exhibition will take place at Arts on Main on Frist Friday, January 5th from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. This event is FREE and open to the public. Light refreshments + beer and wine will be available for purchase. The exhibit will be on display until Saturday, January 27th.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

kathy klein

“Visually, my mixed-media paintings are evocative rather than naturalistic. Layers of color predominate whether paint or collage elements, challenging or lyrical. Hard and soft edges play off each other in the same piece.  Although the works suggest a literal meaning, they can also be read metaphorically. The work leaves “gaps” to be filled in by the viewer using hints and suggestions found in the abstract forms. Although I frequently work in a series, each of the works has individual and specific resonance. And, when shown together, they play off each other for a cumulative effect.”

klein’s installation, Colonialism, won the First Installation Prize at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center in 2010. Her most recent show “Women’s Worlds” moved from Arts on Main to the Woman’s National Democratic Club gallery in D.C."

Live music will be provided by Andy Sowell.

“I was raised in Gloucester county, attending Botetourt Elementary, Peasley Middle, and Gloucester High School. I learned guitar from Larry Heatwole in a class at school, took to it, and kept going. I've performed in a number of venues over the years, a mix of cover and original music. Nowadays I live in the Fredericksburg area and have recently gotten back into the music scene after taking some time off with kids and Covid.

I have an international music repertoire, mixing in a variety of Spanish music and a little bit of Italian, along with the usual classics, and my own originals.”
