ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Juli Schuszler is a Gloucester artist known for her vibrant and dramatic oil masterpieces showcasing the beauty of the natural world. A passion for color is evident in Juli's paintings, inspired by an ongoing love of nature and gardening. Much of Juli’s inspiration comes from her garden. Juli works from real life observations and her own reference photos, focusing on the play of light and shadow, creating drama and visual interest in her art. Often working on large canvases, Juli paints carefully and slowly, creating numerous layers of paint, building as she goes. Juli says, “I like to search for striking and dramatic light in the images that I collect for my references.... I want to transport the viewer to a beautiful world of color and light with my paintings, to take them into a garden of delight!” Anyone can see that the common thread through all her artwork is a love of color and light. Retired from careers in commercial art and then in teaching Art and English in public school, college, and university, Juli now pursues her own art in her home studio. Her artworks are featured in the Bay School for the Arts, The Charles H. Taylor Art Center, and the Crossroads Art Center as well as the RAL Art Center Gallery.

Artist Talk with Sara McCourt
Artist Talk with Sara McCourt
Saturday, April 19
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Join Exhibiting Artist, Sara McCourt, on Saturday, April 19th from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM for an Artist Talk at Arts on Main!
An avid knitter, Sara found that the needles in her hands were the gateway tool to a deeper passion: fiber. Wondering about the sourcing and processing of her mail-order wools led her to complete her Master’s Spinning Certification program at the Olds College in Alberta, Canada. She then began to use her handspun yarns in weaving. This of course led to the use of natural and synthetic dyes in her work. Now, Sara spins and dyes her own yarn, fibers, and fabrics for use in her various fiber arts.
Sara is a member of the Williamsburg Spinners and Weavers Guild, and one of Arts on Main’s Exhibiting Artists for our April show! Sara is also one a beloved teacher here at Arts on Main.
Before her Artist Talk, Sara will be set up in the gallery around 1 pm giving a demonstration! Stop by and see her work!
This talk is free and open to the public.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
“Art is a spirit and an on-going practice that has led to both my passion and purpose. My passion has been to cultivate the art of nature, celebrating the intricate, ever-changing dialogue between the natural world and human creativity. Nature, with all its complexities and subtleties, offers an endless well of inspiration to me as artist. Through working directly with natural elements, I have found my purpose as an educator. I invite my students to join me in developing a deeper relationship with the environment – to cultivate a greater sense of awe and responsibility toward the world that sustains us. In so doing, we unleash our potential to demonstrate its beauty and power in our creative expression of it. My first career, with a degree in business communications, was in corporate marketing, followed by twenty years as a freelance writer and consultant. My second career took me into education and back for a master’s degree and Montessori teacher certification. I have since founded and directed two Montessori secondary schools, become an education consultant and teacher trainer. I now co-direct art and nature education programs for children and adults, in both public and private settings, on and off of our small regenerative Virginia farm.”

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
I have always doodled with a pencil and had an affinity for the arts. As a child, my parents enrolled me in art lessons with a hometown artist after my mother declared that all I did was draw and color! As an adult wanting serious artistic direction, I began to take drawing classes at a local art center in Ohio. Those classes challenged my abilities! I entered the art shows there and started to win awards and sell my paintings. The knowledge I received in those drawing classes was exactly what I needed to get started in other art mediums. I love them all, but pastels and oils are my favorite!Fondly remembering the classes I took as a child, I taught art to students of all ages for many years in a homeschool co-op environment. I also passionately taught kids and adults in my studio when I lived in OhioI now live in Deltaville to be close to family. I am happily married to my high school sweetheart, Ray. We have three daughters and seven grandchildren, and family brings us the greatest joy!

Thursday, May 15
5:30pm - 6:30pm
Join us at Arts on Main on Thursday, May 15 from 5:30pm - 6:30pm for a reception featuring Kindergarten and 1st Grade Palette Pals and Young Artists! One artist from each course will receive a “Best in Show” award!
Palette Pals is Arts on Main’s signature educational program and part of our Youth Art Enrichment Programs. Founded in 2011 in one elementary school as the After-School Enrichment Program, it is now in every elementary school in Gloucester County, with over 3000 children participating to date. Palette Pals is currently conducted as an extracurricular, before-school program for students in grades K-5, led by the school’s art teacher. The program’s focus is on teaching STEAM-based art lessons that focus on current SOL objectives in math and science. Our goals are to provide hands-on experiential learning through art making and to increase student understanding of concepts related to math and science. This program is provided at no charge to the children or the schools and relies solely on grants and donations.
To make this program accessible to homeschooled students in Gloucester (and public school students who are unable to get into the Palette Pals program), we offer a program called “Young Artists” with Arts on Main Youth Instructor, Anne Atkinson. The students in this program follow the same lesson plans and schedule as our Palette Pals students.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
My work is a joyful reaction to the everyday scenes that we might drive past or that stream of light coming through a window as it fleetingly touches on an object. I love the freedom of wandering those backroads and coming upon the perfect spot to pull over and set up my easel. It’s a good balance with the sanctuary of my studio, where I have can work larger, experiment and see where a painting will take me. I have spent much of my life in or around the water and that is reflected throughout my work. My intent is for a painting to be as much about the paint as it is capturing a scene. I really want the viewer to be able to find their own interpretation.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
“I believe each individual has the potential to create a masterpiece, even with very little experience if the effort comes from a true desire to express the inner self. Using a palette knife gives the creator another tool to add to a growing toolbox.
I have been an artist since birth. Mostly I paint, but sometimes I sculpt. I believe life is art. Creation is art. Most of my adult life has been lived in the sky as a professional pilot. I have drawn inspiration from the ever-changing skyscape and many visits to breathtaking landscapes. I paint to create something new that wasn’t there before. I sculpt to give form to my ideas which could or could not have a basis in reality.
Art is freedom.”

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Hi there, my name is Janet Griffin and I am a fiber artist. Specifically, I’d like to say I am a tapestry Weaver. I use a cotton warp background on my loom, and I inlay wool yarn to create an image. My Tapestry weavings are based on the techniques developed by Theo Moorman , based in England. Additionally, I find felted wool extremely creative. Felted paintings, felted bowls, felted flowers, felted purses work extremely well together. My favorite kind of fiber is Corriedale, Romney, and Merino wool or yarn, cotton yarns, Silk, Leicester locks , and Mohair. Feathers are kind of fun too. As you can tell I’m very much drawn into texture. I do love how wool can be soft and fluffy; and yet transformed into wet, thick fabric

I love them all, but pastels and oils are my favorite! Fondly remembering the classes I took as a child, I taught art to students of all ages for many years in a homeschool co-op environment. I also passionately taught kids and adults in my studio when I lived in OhioI now live in Deltaville to be close to family. I am happily married to my high school sweetheart, Ray. We have three daughters and seven grandchildren, and family brings us the greatest joy!

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
“Creating art has always been a main focus in my life. Professionally, I worked as a graphic designer for many years while also pursuing other creative activities. I moved to Virginia 20 years ago and spent the first 6 years as a wildlife rehabilitator raising mostly orphaned baby squirrels. In 2012 I returned to art in the form of drawing in graphite, charcoal, and colored pencils. Fiber art has always interested me and Idiscovered felting in 2015. Creating in fiber – wet and needle felting as well as tapestry weaving – is currently where my journey has taken me. I enjoy the challenge of starting with loose wool fibers and in the case of wet felting, work with soap, water, and agitation to form my vision into a picture or vessel. In needle felting I also start with loose fibers but a barbed needle is my tool and with many needle stabs I create a picture or sculpture. I find both felting and weaving meditative in its repetitiveness and I like that I am using ancient art forms to create something contemporary. But no matter what form creation takes, for me, it is always about the joy of finding that seed of inspiration and seeing it come into form. My art has been accepted in many juried shows and has won awards. I am a member of the Williamsburg Spinners and Weavers and exhibit at the Art Speaks Gallery in Mathews. I have also taught classes in felting and weaving.”

Join Gloria Clifford on Tuesday, April 8th and Wednesday, April 9th from 10:30 AM - 3:00 PM for a mixed media collage workshop at Arts on Main!
In this workshop, students will learn to think out of the box when creating any painting. Although some knowledge is good to have as to composition and color mixing, anyone can join in the fun of collage and mixed media. I will be teaching how to come up with a personal subject that resonates with the soul of each artist, how to create your very own decorative collage papers, what goes into the making of a mixed media painting/art and the materials used to create mixed medium paintings/art. Students will leave with several finished paintings and a new awareness and knowledge of this very fun way to create a work of art that is individual as well as fun to create!
All supplies are provided by the instructor.

About the Williamsburg Spinners & Weavers Guild
Williamsburg Spinners and Weavers Guild is an educational organization formed in 1986 to foster interest in spinning, weaving and the related fiber arts, and to encourage the exchange of information and inspiration among members and the greater community and region at large. Anyone interested in spinning, weaving, knitting, felting, etc. is welcome to join. The members are located primarily in the Williamsburg area and on the Middle and Northern Necks.
MEET A FEW OF THE ARTISTS!
ELIZABETH BUNCH
“I started knitting at baseball, football and wrestling practices. I picked up a drop spindle in 2013 and was immediately engrossed with yarn structure. Color was the next addition, so I started dyeing fiber in my kitchen with food color and other things found in my kitchen. I acquired my first wheel in 2015, so I had to start processing fleeces to feed the beast. Joining the Williamsburg Spinners and Weavers Guild in March of 2023 has been a revelation, creatively.”
JANET GRIFFIN
Hi I’m Janet Griffin, retired elementary art teacher. Yes, I had a great time doing that for 40 years. So now I get to teach adults, and I must say it has been fabulous. So my work is based on our natural world, I find texture in colors to be so alluring. Both weaving and felting we will explore.
KATHY KUHN
Kathy Kuhn, a Williamsburg-based fiber artist, has loved fiber and textiles for a lifetime. Kathy earned her Bachelor of Clothing and Textiles from Auburn University in 1976 and her Master of Science in Textiles and Clothing with Minor in Handweaving from the University of Tennessee in 1978.
“My textile journey began as a child crocheting dresses for troll dolls, then designing and sewing clothing. While majoring in Clothing and Textiles at Auburn University, a corner room in the Home Economics (yes, I went to school when Home Ec was taught!) building had a room full of looms. I was hooked - drawn to color and texture. Weaving allows an endless possibility to express oneself and produce fun and functional items. When I’m not weaving I can be found working in my garden, walking my dog, working out at the JCC Rec Center, or the best times are spent visiting one of my three sons, or playing with one of my 5 grandsons or the Princess. Yes, one granddaughter!”
SARA MCCOURT
An avid knitter, Sara found that the needles in her hands were the gateway tool to a deeper passion: fiber. Wondering about the sourcing and processing of her mail-order wools led her to complete her Master’s Spinning Certification program at the Olds College in Alberta, Canada. She then began to use her handspun yarns in weaving. This of course led to the use of natural and synthetic dyes in her work. Now,Sara spins and dyes her own yarn, fibers, and fabrics for use in her various fiber arts.
SANDI PETTY
A weaver, designer, seamstress, teacher. I came to weaving by the luck of environment! My mother learned to weave from our neighbor, so from the age of 9 or 10 there has been weaving in my life. Sewing hand wovens came when my mom would give me yardage she had woven and say,” do something with this!” I am challenged by yarn, fiber and yardage that I purchase or is gifted to me, and I love to find purpose for discarded items. I have added to my knowledge through fiber friends, guilds and classes. I now spin, make Kumihimo braids, stitch Japanese style Tamari balls and find ways to combine these skills with my sewing to produce decorative and useful products.
KATHRYN SWANSON
Kathryn “Kate” Swanson’s love of art began at an early age with art classes starting when she was about five years old. Since then, she has explored a wide variety of media including painting, drawing, pastel, pottery, glass, and fiber. Today, she primarily works in fiber, embracing a medium and technique that she has loved since elementary school. She sees her weaving as a meditative practice that is both calming and exhilarating, and she loves creating works of art that are aesthetically pleasing and often functional. Taking the cloth off the loom and realizing that she’s transformed yarn into handwoven art is one of her favorite parts of being an artist. When she is not weaving, Kate is the Executive Director of Gloucester Arts on Main.
Live music will be provided by Ami Baker.
Thank you to our First Friday Music Sponsor, Yolanda’s!
Ami Baker is 29 year-old female musician local to Gloucester VA. She is a singer-songwriter, lover of Jesus, and she enjoys writing songs to make people feel less alone.

A Musical Odyssey From Mathews, Virginia
Nestled in the serene heart of Mathews, Virginia, Hunter Owens was born and bred amidst the timeless beauty of this coastal town. His journey into the world of music started with the simplest of joys—singing.
From the earliest years of his life, Hunter's voice carried the promise of something special, a rare gift that would one day enchant audiences near and far. At the tender age of six, Hunter embarked on a new adventure when he picked up his first guitar. Those initial strums may not have produced symphonies, but they were the humble beginnings of a lifelong love affair with the instrument. Hunter readily admits that he wasn't a prodigy from the start, but he possessed something even more precious: an unyielding determination to improve.
In his quest to master the guitar, Hunter found an invaluable guide and mentor in Barbara McGlohn. Her expertise and unwavering support became instrumental in shaping his musical journey. With each lesson, Hunter's technique grew more refined, and his understanding of music deepened.
One of Hunter's regular performance spots is the Gwynn's Island Baptist Church (GIBC), where every Sunday, he lends his musical talents to create a harmonious backdrop for the congregation's spiritual journey.
Hunter Owens is more than just a young musician—he is a living testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the nurturing embrace of a close-knit community. His journey from an aspiring artist to a dedicated performer is a source of inspiration to all who hear his music. As he continues to captivate audiences with his melodies, Hunter Owens stands as a living embodiment of the magic that can happen when one follows their heart in pursuit of their dreams.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
JODY BALL
“Drawing and painting have been a part of my life as long as I can remember. As a child, my parents enrolled me in art lessons with a prominent hometown artist after my mother declared that all I did was draw and color! I now live in Deltaville, VA but passionately taught art to students of all ages for many years in a homeschool co-op environment and my studio when I lived in Ohio. My first love is the pastel medium and my representational paintings usually tend towards a softened, sometimes impressionistic appearance. Nature is my inspiration and I am possessed by the colors, forms, and textures that are possible in creating two-dimensional art. My paintings grace the walls of many homes across the country and I currently show my paintings at the RAL Art Center in Kilmarnock.”
