Paint & Build a Whimsical Flying Pig Automaton

Join Karyn Gallion at Arts on Main on Saturday, December 16, and Sunday, December 17 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm and paint + build a whimsical flying pig automaton! This is a 2-day beginner’s workshop in which you will paint and assemble a simple mechanical marvel made from laser-cut wood. This finished project actually moves when the handle is turned. You do not need to have special mechanical knowledge to have fun in this class!
Day 1 (3 hours)
You will be introduced to some basic mechanisms and experiment with how they can be applied to playful moving sculptures. Then we will go over the components of the project and paint the parts so they can dry overnight.
Day 2 (3 hours)
Assembly day! Step-by-step instructions and individual help will be provided as needed. There will be time for any touch-up painting, if necessary.
All supplies will be provided by the instructor, just come ready to create a masterpiece!

Sanded and primed engineered wood parts
Glue
Galvanized wire, mechanisms, and all hardware required
Acrylic paints, brushes, paint pens, colored wire
The use of the hand tools needed
All kinds of inspirations will be waiting for you. Use the sample as a guide or lean into your imagination to paint The Flying Pig to make it your own character.
Knowledge Level: This class is designed for curious minds who want to create a quirky objet d’artl. No specialized knowledge is required.
PRO TIP: Patience is a plus when assembling moving mechanisms.

In her makerspace workshop, Karyn Gallion channels her artistic versatility into painting, sculpting, building, and experimentation. Karyn's fervor for creating automata has grown into a passion. These kinetic artworks spring to life with whimsical narratives when the crank is turned. Her process melds power tools, hand carving, and laser-cutting to craft each component, adorned with an eclectic mix of media that imbues the automatons with their unique charm. Self-taught in the art of automata, Karyn draws upon her acquired expertise in commercial art, theatrical production, product design, and digital user experience (UX) to weave captivating tales. She finds joy in observing how people engage with her work, and making her art a bridge to connect with appreciative hearts.
